Fall beginnings…

The fall seeds have been planted, and it’s hard to believe it is time already! We are looking forward to offering fall produce to everyone this year. Collards, red cabbage, spinach, beets, carrots, snap peas, broccoli, and radishes are all on the menu at Holly Hill for fall/winter offerings. This will be the first year we grow in the tunnels for fall crops, so bring on the learning curve. 🙂 On a more summer like note, the stand is stocked, and we have red hot jalapeno peppers added to the mix. The cracking exterior on the peppers along with the red color informed us they are ripe and hot! The small red mini bell peppers are sweet just like their giant sisters, and the banana peppers are sweet too. Tomatoes continue to ripen, and we are excited to be able to offer them later throughout the season this year.
A few folks took advantage of our huge sale in Goods today. They enjoyed the great deals on all wood furniture, and our handmade décor. Are you ready to get in on the awesome sale? Don’t get left out, swing on in and see Lisa. If she isn’t in the store, push the door bell and she will be down to show you around. Happy hump day eve! J&L

Cooler temps have arrived in August?

It has been a busy day on the farm. The tomato tunnel needed the weekly cleansing, and we are excited to say the tomatoes are ripening faster now that the weather is cooler. Great news for all the tomato lovers with slicing tomatoes being the main act again. Lisa has added a new canned goody to the offerings … welcome hot pepper jelly. This can be used as a glazing for meats & vegetables, toppings for cheese & crackers, or mixed with cream cheese for a dip. The stand is again replenished with freshness.
While the summer blow out in Goods is happening, a question has been debated multiple times over the past 2 weeks. Goods was not open for a summer to fall transition last year, and our opinions have been mixed. If you would like to start seeing fall offerings at this time of the year please comment and let us know. We value your feedback, and hope you will share them with us.
The summer days sure are clicking by at a fast pace. Labor day is quickly approaching which typically means the “unofficial” end of summer. Wishing all a peaceful evening. HHFG

Preserving the freshness.

Many customers have inquired recently on how much longer the produce stand will be open. The answer is as long as the plants continue to produce, which is all predicated by what mother nature throws our way regarding temperatures. Some plants come to an end of life cycle, while others continue to produce until it gets cold. For example our indeterminate tomatoes, they are now in tunnels which will have end walls reinstalled once the temperatures drop. As this is our first year with the tunnels and also using the lean & lower technique, we really don’t know what to expect yet. Speaking of the lean and lower technique, we have tomato plants in the tunnels that are about 15 feet tall. Quite impressive looking.
There are ways for you to savor the last bit of summer produce during the fall, and winter months. Canning is not the only available option, freezing is also one. We currently have a upright freezer full of produce that will last us through the winter months. Green beans, peppers, squash, zucchini, and some fruits are so simple to freeze. All it takes is boiling water, ice cold water, and freezer bags. Wash and rinse your produce, cut it as you desire, drop the produce into boiling water for 3 minutes (blanching), and then immediately drop the same produce into ice cold water until cool to stop the cooking process. Drain the produce in a colander over the sink, place in freezer bags, and then put them in the ice chest. Make sure you put the date, and what produce it is on the outside of the bag so you know what to use first. Most will last up to 6 months. Yes, it really is that simple. You can enjoy homegrown produce throughout the winter months until we open back up again in the spring.
Onto Goods. Goods opens again tomorrow, and wow do we have an amazing sale going on. The furniture has been significantly marked down, and then the summer discount is still applied to your purchases. You can’t find many deals like this. Swing by, get your fresh produce, and stop into Goods for some great items at the lowest prices of the year. Have a marvelous evening! HHFG

Oh deer…

It is the 1st of August already with tomorrow being the first day of the school year for Cherokee County.
Our August morning started with quite the AM surprise in the front yard. Last night while floating around in our recreational device, we heard something that sounded like a tire blow out several hundred yards up the road. A vehicle then stopped at Gin Ln for a piece, and drove off before I could get down there to offer assistance. Well as the post title probably gives it away, the car hit a deer. Said deer somehow managed to make it all the way down to our front yard, and expired due to injuries. A first in both of our lives of having to dispose of a large animal. After multiple phone calls, and research this morning, we found out that ultimately it was our problem to deal with. The circle of life now continues away in a friendly neighbor’s woods. Another chapter in the book of life.

Meanwhile while the front yard was having a cleanup on isle 10, Lisa was out back handling the daily picking chores. The stand is stocked for Monday. The large slicing tomatoes now grace the stand again after a Saturday sell out, fresh raspberries are in the Farm fridge, and the last of the season watermelons are in the stand. For the okra lovers, we have a good supply for tomorrow. As a reminder, come early if there is something in the stand you have your eye on. We wish everyone an uneventful, fantastic Sunday, and wish the kiddos a fun first day of school tomorrow! J&L

Bye bye July

Wow, only one more day left in July? Where has the summer gone? It is hard to believe August is here starting Sunday. The fall seeds are being prepared for seed trays already, and in another couple weeks the fall holiday décor will arrive in Goods.
With the unrelenting heat and humidity this week, the gardens have been slow producers of their fruits as mentioned. Rest assured we are keeping the stand as stocked as possible with tomatoes to okra, beans to corn, and all of the fresh grown here, non-GMO produce we all have come to love.
Need a piece of unique furniture for your home, vacation home, or cabin? Or that one of a kind decorative item? Intrigued of what you might find? We invite you to satisfy that curiosity, and come on up to the Goods building. There just might be something that speaks to you. (Peeking into the window doesn’t count.) 🙂
Appreciative is an understatement for the pm storm to come cool mother Earth off. A heat index of 102 degrees was noticed today. We enjoyed watching the cleansing rain fall on the farm giving everything a drink. Until tomorrow, may your dinners be delicious, and your evening be relaxing. J&L

Pressure cooker

Another summer day in GA where it has felt like being in a pressure cooker. Fortunately next week looks like we will have some reprieve, albeit maybe with some rain.
We hope you liked the recipe from last night’s post It would appear some folks may be having that for dinner this week as the peppers seemed to make an exit from the stand today. Don’t worry, be happy, there are more for tomorrow. The ventilation fans recently installed in the tunnels appear to be helping keep the tomatoes cooler as color change from green to red is a bit quicker now. Which means …. more fresh, juicy slicing tomatoes are coming soon. The Cherokee purple have continued to ripen quickly, and more are in the stand. Farm is restocked and ready for Friday.
The raffle drawing jar has more entries, a thanks to everyone for visiting, and we hope you enjoy your purchases. Plenty of locally made décor items are still available with end of season deals to be had.
Stay cool! We wish you a great evening! HHFG

Taco stuffed peppers anyone?

Something a little different tonight. A recipe that combines stuffed bell peppers (found in the Farm stand) with a Mexican twist. This recipe is courtesy of reciperunner.com.

Taco Stuffed Peppers

  • 4 bell peppers (green, yellow or red)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground turkey
  • 1/2 cup diced yellow onion
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro (optional)
  • 4 ounce can diced green chiles
  • 1 cup black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 cup frozen corn
  • 8 ounces salsa or red enchilada sauce
  • 3/4 cup shredded Colby Jack or cheddar cheese
  • Directions: Preheat oven to 400° F. and line a baking sheet with foil. Spray the foil with cooking spray.
  • Cut the peppers in half lengthwise then remove the core and seeds. Place the halved peppers on the baking sheet cut side up, and sprinkle with salt. Bake for 15 minutes.
  • While the peppers are baking, heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add in the ground turkey, onion, spices, salt and pepper. Crumble the turkey with a wooden spoon as it cooks. When the turkey is cooked through, stir in the black beans, corn, green chiles, cilantro, and salsa or enchilada sauce. Taste for seasoning, and bring the mixture to a simmer.
  • Remove the peppers from the oven. Pour out any liquid that’s gathered inside of them, and then evenly divide the filling into each half. Bake for another 10 minutes and top them with the shredded cheese. Bake for 5 more minutes, then serve.

Goods will be open tomorrow for shopping, and raffle entries. We have made it past hump day, and are heading towards the weekend. Have a good night. See ya’ at the stand.

Broadcasting from Holly Hill Farm & Goods, your attention please!

We come to you this afternoon with much information about happenings, and availability here at Holly Hill. As a reminder, only non-GMO seeds are grown, and only OMRI certified products are used for fungi/pest control when necessitated. Since there are no wax coatings, or early pickings of our produce they may not look like the typical grocer, but we feel the taste will overwhelm the looks.
Onto some more fruitful news. The first of the silver queen corn is here, while the bicolor peaches & cream corn is coming to a closure. The new batch of cucumbers is growing nicely, so more should be available soon. Large slicing tomatoes are still taking their time to ripen due to the recent high temps, regardless of the tunnel fans constantly running. Fortunately small slicing, paste, cherry, & yellow candy tomatoes are coming out quickly, and readily available in the stand. On another note, Lisa has been canning some new tasty treats. On Thursday we welcome peach preserves, and peach blueberry jam to the Farm stand. Also as a first for us, a small crop of peaches have been picked. If you are interested in them for your canning/cooking/baking adventures, please message, email, or call us with the amount you would like. These peaches will not be stocked in the Farm stand. Hot scorpion peppers are nearing ready, so for those who like it HOT, stay tuned.
Meanwhile, happening in the Goods store. A new handcrafted item has been chosen for the final summer raffle. It’s a handmade summer flower arrangement with a butterfly embellishment (see photo below). This last summer raffle will run through August 21st. Stop in, register, browse, and shop while the remaining spring/summer collection is available at a discount. Thanks to everyone who has visited with us in Goods.
So that concludes this evening’s broadcast from Holly Hill news. The rain just recently finished passing through with 1 inch in 30 minutes. Fortunately no hail that came through just north of us. Have a happy Wednesday eve! J&L

Back to school is next Monday

School days are a short week away here in Cherokee County. Last minute vacations and new school year preparations are under way for many.
The Farm stand is stocked after a hot daily picking.
The final weeks of the summer sale in Goods will last until the end of August. If you see something you like, scoop it up before its gone. The workings for the last summer raffle are being laid out, so stay tuned. As a reminder, after each drawing your entries are shredded to preserve your privacy, and each raffle requires a new entry.
Keeping it short for today. We wish all a superb evening. See you at the farm.

Hello okra

The heat of the hot GA summer causes certain vegetables to yield fruit in abundance, and others such as the large slicing tomatoes are taking longer to ripen. Okra is a lover of the heat and more is available Monday in the Farm stand. A variety of peppers, peaches & cream corn (bicolor), watermelon, eggplant, and beans are packed out with ready to eat watermelon, and raspberries available in the Farm fridge. Tomato yield for smaller cherry, small slicing, and yellow candy tomatoes has kicked into overdrive, The tunnel house fans are whirring 24/7 to try and keep everything cooler. New cucumbers were planted but are still young, so there is a limited supply of them at the moment. The silver queen corn is almost ready, just waiting on mother nature to ripen them up, and will be in the stand soon.
The Goods artwork raffle drawing was done last night. Congratulations to Sandy Bost, we have sent you an email. Thanks for shopping with us! Stay tuned for our next raffle.
We hope everyone has a great remainder of Sunday, and a fabulous week. See ya’ at the stand! HHFG
